Your New Puppy!!!
We are thrilled that you have decided to get a new puppy for your family. We have loved and raised miniature schnauzers since 2014. We have included some information for you.
Your puppy is a CKC or AKC registered miniature schnauzer as you were informed during purchase. We have dogs with both registries. You have been given the application with a unique registration number to register your puppy online to get its papers. You can also get its pedigree from them.
Your puppy has had its dewclaws removed and tail docked by our veterinarian. It has also had its first and dose of “5-Way” puppy vaccinations and will need two follow up doses from your veterinarian. Vaccination information along with the bottle label from your puppy is included on the puppy record folder.
It is normal for puppies to have intestinal worms as they grow. ALL PUPPIES HAVE WORMS. Your puppy has been dewormed at weeks 2, 4, 6, & 8, and should be checked periodically by your vet and dewormed as needed. Your puppy has been dewormed with the medicine “Strongid” also known as Pyrantel Pamoate. Please remember… dewormings are constant especially with puppies. After worming you may see long white worms in the poop. Its normal. It's a process.
Your veterinarian will advise you on heartworm preventative. All dogs need this. Our adults are on Bravecto. Your vet may have a preference. Just know most are about $30 per month.
Rabies. Your puppy has not had a rabies shot. It isn't old enough. But check with your vet and set an appointment. It should be about $12.
Your puppy is used to lots of play and has been raised as if it will live with our family forever! It has been around other dogs and cats. It is used to house sounds. But will require a period of adjustment to its new environment.
It is not uncommon for puppies to develop diarrhea when going to a new home away from mommy for the first time. Be patient. However, if the issue persists seek vet attention immediately. Kaopectate helps 1cc but i'm not a veterinarian. But if there is an upset tummy after 2 days. See a vet.
Food. Dogs respond to changes in diet. It gives them diarrhea often. Switch your puppy slowly. Your puppy has had Purina Puppy Chow and Purina Moist and Meaty. If you want to switch to something else. Do it slowly.
Our adults eat Purina dog chow supplemented with occasional boiled chicken.
Schnauzers respond well to puppy pad and crate training. No puppy is completely trained by 7 weeks. Begin working with it immediately to develop the best routine for you and your family. (Be patient with the little fella!)
Be aware. Your puppy comes from rural Alabama. Your puppy is not leash trained at 7 weeks. It will require work on your part.
Your puppy is used to sleeping with his litter mates on their blanket in a small pen. The first few nights may be trying and it will probably whine… Be patient. It will Pass! WARNING!! Multiple years of experience. If in the first week you give into the whining and put the puppy in your bed to snuggle you will have him/her permanent. We give you the scented blanket to put with them in a crate. Unless you want the puppy with you 10 to 16 years… let them whine. They learn.. mom and I speak of this with 3 each in our beds!
Your puppy will need grooming. Schnauzers do not shed like other dogs but need hair maintenance. We use fresh pet dog shampoo (ordered from AMAZON) it smells great!
